I need your opinion on this as its something i wish to bring up at a talk i am doing for students at a large London university on 28th Nov .

I personaly do not like the word transgender! Ok it sounds nice as it contains the word "gender" and not "sexual" but to me it is a misleading word as in it puts "all" transexuals under an umberella with a mixed group of people IE: Crossdressers/Transvestites ect .I have nothing again'st those people as its up to them what they do in private but they are not the ones having to live in the real world so i would be gratefull if transexuals wether that be post op or pre op of both genders would let me know what you think of the word! and i mean your opinion and an honest one please and after the result i will tell you the reason why this is so important not just to me.

I cannot see your vote or who voted so it is in strict confidence.

Thank you.

`Transsexuals are those who want to move from one end of gender binary to the other, while transgender people are those who do not identify as one end or the other, which includes transsexuals, crossdressers, etc. For a lot of crossdressers, it's not a private issue as several will crossdress in public in a "persona" or whatever the case may be; I'm not a crossdresser, but I'm speaking from what I've understood from crossdressers I know.

I feel like people use the words interchangeably, when they shouldn't be. I don't think one nor the other should be eliminated so that the other can take its place.

`Smith! thanks for your response.
We are all different and it would be a very boring world if we were all the same.
The word transgender is becoming a word to discribe all tyes of people with a wish to change gender for all reasons wether that be for fun or s----l pleasure or in my own and most transexuals cases the need to be ourselves! that need is because we are the gender we have to change to because nature screwed up and put us in the wrong body.
I think i can speak for the majority of transexuals that our lives depend on being ourselves and should never ever be mis-understood by the general public because the public can and do make some transexuals lives a living hell and i believe that word which has been around since the 1970s is being used to much today and therefore confusing the general public as it doe's have to many meanings , so to Jo public transgender means anyone who changes gender for all reasons which in some cases for transexuals are life or death situations! The suicide rates prove that.

I said in a previous post i do not call a can of paint a piece of wood ect thats because its not and if the word Bus had 6 different meanings and you needed to catch a bus to get somewhere and a Camel with bus written on it turned up to get you there i think you would be calling a Taxi (unless you like camel rides).

My thoughts on this word are based on research i have been reading and my own experiences.

As far as i am concerned a word is used to discribe something , I am transexual "One word = one meaning" and i would much prefere just to be reffered to as a woman or a female but i cannot get away from the fact i was born in a male body.
Luckely my life is good but for some it is not and some do not make it and the internet is confusing people to much and i fear for the lives of the younger generation who log on to so called trans websites and see S-- s-- sex! what must go through thier minds???do they think is this my life??? is this what i am??? .Do you understand ? i need to get others opinions because while i was writing this it is most likely another transexual ended thier life somewhere on this planet! I care and i want to do anything i can to help put a stop to it , its a waste of human life and i have said before a crossdresser or a transvestite or other variations will not commit suicide because they cannot wear a dress today as they will just do it the next day or the next or next week.
A transexuals life "depends" on them being able to be themselves all of the time! supression causes depression which leads to loss of life for some.

This post for the record is in no-way discriminating again'st anyone it is just fact.

Take care Julia.

`Hi Julia, I think our culture is still in its infancy in dealing with TS issues, so the terminology, the concepts of "disorder," etc are still evolving. Personally, I realize that the term "disorder" could refer to the fact that our bodies don't match our gender identity. But, some interpret the term to indicate that we are mentally disordered. Anyway, I have no problem referring to myself as transsexual. But, it seems to me that "transsexual" is under the heading of "transgender." I have even referred to myself as a "transsexual" before. And, I understand that this term is now considered to be as culturally loaded as the term, "------." Anyway, I believe our culture must evolve more before these terms coalesce. Thanks for your questions!

`as far as it being a disorder goes"and this may be a slight over simplification"but, some people have freckles and some dont.i find the term disorder as related to transgender people very offensive.maybe god had a disorder when he put the parts where he did-but were ok.dont we have enough problems already without making our differances another one?its mostly a problem if we let someone who has no first hand knowledge of what they are telling us define the situation as they want regardless of how long they stayed in school.we know-they are learning from us!-nancy

Transgender is an umbrella term to signify those who are not cisgender. This term includes transsexuals, crossdressers, intersex persons (should they choose to identify as such), hijras, feminine men (should they choose), masculine women (should they choose), two-spirit, bigender, thirdgender, agender, androgynous persons, drag kings, drag queens, enuchs (should they choose), transvestites and genderqueers.

[(removed)]

I like it being an umbrella term; it gives us one big family to associate with! And there's so much stigma against all genders that everyone deserves a chance to be acknowledged for who they are and accepted. I have no qualms with "being in the same region as crossdressers" because there's nothing wrong with crossdressers! Or any gender variation.
