`well thank you for the info and if they gots a problem with it and wanna make me dress as the guys and not like the other girls then they dont need me to sacrifice my life for my country but thats just the way i see it so they better not be expectin me to give up my hair for a buzz cut or anything like that either they take it and elt me join as stephanie michelle wich is my legal name or lie about takin it and make me buzz cut my hair and i will quit the second they do or tell me they wont take it up fron the beginning and i wont waste my time and effort dad told me it'd help me straighten my life out but i dont want my life straightened out at the expense of havin to be force to life as a guy and i wont accept anyless so either they take it as a grain of salt accept it and go forward or they can go ---- themselves

.Obviously your dad doesn't understand that it is difficult to survive as person if you can't be who you really are. My cousin literally killed himself trying to live as a man when in fact he was a woman. If you are of age and can find the resources move to Seattle. There are many resources for transgendered people including basic medical care.

`I'm in a few groups over on myspace and they talk a lot about joining the military. I had thought about it myself, but you have to put off transition. I'm not sure how it'd work with the name change part of it, but I believe they'd put you with the guys if they let you in at all. IF you did happen to get in and they find out later, it won't be good. Being trans and being in the military really don't go together at all.

`I'm glad that you re-thought the whole process. The military does have the don't ask don't tell policy but they will be strict on the definition of male vs female. They absolutely would want your hair cut etc as well. I think that you can find a nitch in the field somewhere ie security or something similar like private investigation if it's something that you want to pursue.

`I see that this thread is a few months old, but it caught my eye and I wanted to weigh in.

I think this is a great topic, not only for this site..but to share with others in our lives. This might seem like one persons desire to serve their country...but this topic is as old as the military itself.

WHO should be allowed to serve?

Personally, I feel that anyone who can mentally and physically perform the duties asked of them should be able to serve in the military. There is a lot of heated debate out there right now. Some say that a gender-indifferent, or perceived-gay, somehow hurts troop morale...and distracts people from doing there job. WTF is THAT?

It's actually sad, but there was a time not so long ago when they said that having a person of color serving was a distraction, etc. The U.S. military was only racially intergrated in 1948.

It's called progress.

My point is that the social climate in the civilian world will inevidably affect the make up of the military forces that defend it. In a phrase...."It's just goint to take a little time".

GUESS WHAT!? The time is NOW! There are several nations in the world who have and support soldiers who are transgendered. Canada and United Kingdom come to mind. I had the opportunity to review several articles I found online regarding the topic and was pleased to see that progress is happening SOMEWHERE in the world.

So, what about ME? I'm actaully a 10 year veteran of the United States Army. I enlisted when I was 19, and got out in 2004. (You do the math). I tell you, it is STILL one of my proudest accomplishments; especially in retrospect. My only regret? I got out because I HAD to start living my life like I always new I should. That is a tragity...because I was VERY good at what I did. I'd move to Canada...but I love this country too damn much to do that. So I'll do my part and spread the gospel...and let people know...that IF you want to serve your country...than you should be allowed to.

Keep in mind that wearing the uniform isn't the only way that we can serve the greater good.

BRING OUR BOYS & GIRLS HOME!

Kassie
